This matrix, although useful for conceptualizing the different takes on the tensions between emotion and reason, and horizontality and verticality, does not recognize one central tenet of the problem: that the clearly demarcated lines are not as stable as we might think, and that political subjectivity operates in a constant flux along the axes of reason – emotion and verticality – horizontality. As I have argued above, there is also a clear sense of hierarchies in these quadrants, where the vertical is often superior to the horizontal, and the rational is superior to the emotional. In response to this analytical stalemate, I offer an alternative framework to understand the Indignados movement and Podemos as emotional or affective political subjects. To do so, I introduce the concept of visceral ties.
